The set of measurement and control instruments an operator uses when the underlying frame is transactional. Instruments that count what a transactional operation can count — covers, average check, table turns, labor percent, food cost percent — read as if these numbers are the operation itself rather than lagging traces of it.
Explanation #
Not the instruments themselves. The relationship between the operator and the instruments.
An operator running [Transactional Instrumentation] reads the dashboard as the operation. The dashboard becomes the object of attention; the operation becomes the source of dashboard inputs.
The frame produces its own reinforcement: what the dashboard cannot see, the operator cannot see. What the dashboard prizes, the operator prizes. The instruments select for what they can measure — and what they can measure is the surface of the transaction, not the depth of the relational operation underneath.
Road 2 does not eliminate instrumentation. It changes what gets instrumented and how the instruments feed into decisions. The lagging traces still matter — they set next month’s plan, they fund menu mix decisions. But they don’t run today’s shift, and they don’t define the operation.
