Explanation #
A dashboard is supposed to be a window. [The Metric Cage] names what happens when the window becomes the only thing the operator can see through — the instrument set stops informing the operator’s perception and starts defining the boundaries of it. Anything the dashboard doesn’t measure effectively stops existing for decision-making purposes.
This is the perceptual version of [The Dashboard Trap] — where that term names the operational failure mode (the dining room becomes a rumor while the dashboard becomes reality), [The Metric Cage] names the constraint on the operator’s capacity to see past the instrument set in the first place. Escaping it requires deliberately reading signals the dashboard was never built to capture.
