5.X — Start Now #

Whatever your timeline — five years, ten years, twenty years, or no firm plan at all — start building toward transferability today.

Not because an exit is imminent. Because the business that’s ready to be sold is the business that’s ready for anything.

I reviewed a three-unit operation whose community brand equity was real — three decades of recognition, loyal Guests, supportive ownership. The diagnosis was clear: a severe leadership gap, no coaching infrastructure, no financial controls, no meaningfully differentiated Guest experience, and margins that couldn’t fund the changes required to fix any of it.

The prescriptions were delivered. The work was not done.

Those restaurants are now closed. The brand equity, the community goodwill, the decades of history — all of it gone. Not because the business was unsalvageable. Because the fundamentals this book describes were never implemented. Every chapter in this book existed in that diagnosis. Every one of them was a prescription that could have changed the outcome. The work was available. The work was not done.

That is the cost of waiting.

Exit planning starts on day one — not when you’re ready to leave. The things that make a business sellable are the same things that make it excellent. Building toward a transferable business doesn’t limit you. It frees you.

Systems built. Leaders developed. Financials clean. Culture transferable.

That’s not an exit strategy. That’s just what a great business looks like.

The exit is only possible if you were always building something bigger than yourself.
