The shift does not have time for a positions-to-interests negotiation. The Lead who is managing a conflict between two cast members at 7:30pm on a Friday does not have the luxury of a conversation that reaches the interest level. The standard must hold. The Guest must be protected. The floor must keep moving.
[Positions vs. Interests] in the Performance fundamental operates differently than in People. It is not a resolution discipline — it is a triage discipline. The Lead who can quickly read whether a conflict is a positions conflict or an interests conflict makes a better immediate decision about how to handle it.
The positions conflict — two cast members arguing about who covers a section — gets resolved at the position level in the moment and followed up at the interest level after service. The Lead who only resolves the position without the follow-up has managed the shift and deferred the conflict. The follow-up conversation that addresses the interest — what is each person actually protecting — is what prevents the same argument next Friday.
The interests conflict — a cast member who is visibly off because something happened before the shift that has nothing to do with the floor — does not get resolved on the floor. It gets acknowledged, contained, and addressed after service. The Lead who tries to resolve an interests conflict during a shift has misread the triage. The interest needs space and time that the shift cannot provide.
The Performance discipline: read the level of the conflict before deciding how to handle it. Position conflict → resolve now, follow up on the interest. Interest conflict → contain now, address after. The Lead who conflates the two either delays resolution of a positions conflict that could be handled quickly or forces an interests conversation into a time and space where it cannot land.
