# Unifying Legacy

### Category

IL

### Definition

The Perspective discipline of knowing the story a building is telling -- whether written deliberately or assembled by accumulation -- and deciding whether it is the story the operator intends. Every building has a legacy whether the operator designed one or not. The default legacy is whatever the cast absorbed and transmitted informally -- habits, shortcuts, standards, and stories that accumulated without intention. The designed legacy is the narrative the operator built deliberately: who we are, what came before us, what we are responsible for carrying forward. Legacy is not nostalgia -- it is architecture. The standard that outlives the individuals who hold it was built into the culture, not into the person.

### Explanation

The line worth sitting with is "legacy is not nostalgia, it is architecture." Most operators who think about legacy at all think backward -- honoring what came before. [Unifying Legacy] asks the operator to think structurally instead: is the story currently running through this building the one I intend, or one that assembled itself by accumulation while I wasn't watching?

The cast member who understands they're contributing to something that preceded them and will continue after them holds the standard differently than one who understands only their shift -- which is the entire payoff of doing this work deliberately rather than letting legacy default the way [Environment As Default] describes cast behavior defaulting when nobody designs the instruction set.
