# Trained Departure

### Definition

Two variants of a cast member's exit after development investment. Failure-mode variant: a generic skill-acquisition cast member with no personal inspiration or match to the role exits with the skill set the operator funded -- the operator paid full cost and got only partial output. Operator-chosen variant: a rockstar or calibration cast member for whom the operator knowingly pays full cost, with a two-part return -- rockstar-level output during tenure, plus a recalibration effect on the rest of the cast.

### Explanation

The term does real work by refusing to treat every departure-after-training as the same event. The failure-mode variant is the one operators fear and rightly so -- money spent on development that walks out the door with nothing left behind, because the [Two Inspirations] were never actually engaged and the cast member was trained on skill alone. The operator-chosen variant looks identical on the exit line of a spreadsheet but isn't the same transaction at all: the operator went in with eyes open, got real value during the tenure, and the departure itself leaves a calibration mark on the rest of the team -- a visible standard of what excellence looked like while it was in the building.

The diagnostic an operator should run before writing off a training investment as wasted: was this cast member ever actually matched to a real development desire, or just skill-trained and left to find their own reason to stay? [Trained Departure] failure mode is preventable with [The Match]. The operator-chosen version isn't a failure at all -- it's a cost the operator paid with full knowledge of what they were buying.
