# The Operators Principle

### Definition

Once the cause of a problem is known, the operator no longer has a problem, he has a decision. Reframes problem-solving as decision-making the moment root cause is identified. Pairs with [The Operator's Filter] and [The Operator's Bottleneck].

### Explanation

Most operators experience an unsolved problem as a fog -- something wrong, cause unclear, options unclear. The moment the cause is actually named, the fog lifts and what's left isn't a mystery anymore, it's a choice between known paths. That reframe changes the emotional weight of the work: a problem feels open-ended and draining, a decision feels closed and actionable.

This is why so much of operating well comes down to correctly diagnosing cause before reaching for a fix. An operator who acts before the cause is clear is making a decision without having earned the right to call it one -- he's still guessing at a problem while believing he's already deciding. [The Operator's Principle] is the discipline of doing the diagnostic work first, because the decision that follows a real cause is faster and cleaner than any decision made to relieve the discomfort of not knowing.
