# The Operators Bottleneck

### Definition

Parent axiom: the operator is the constraint of the operator-led business -- an identity claim, not just a behavior claim. Child mechanism: [Operator Throughput], the rate at which the operator-as-bottleneck processes the work of operating. The operation's throughput cannot exceed the operator's; when the bottleneck expands, throughput rises, and when it contracts, throughput falls.

### Explanation

The hierarchy here is deliberate and was corrected on exactly this point: the bottleneck is the parent, throughput is the mechanical manifestation of it, not the other way around. Working directly on throughput without working on the bottleneck itself is impossible -- there's nowhere else to apply the work. Every throughput improvement is a bottleneck improvement wearing a different name.

This reframes a common operator complaint. "I can't get more done" is a throughput statement. The actual constraint underneath it is the bottleneck statement: the operator's own capacity -- attention, judgment, bandwidth -- is the ceiling the whole operation is bumping against. You don't fix a ceiling by working faster underneath it. You fix it by expanding the bottleneck itself, usually through building the [Lead Family] and role architecture that routes decisions somewhere other than the operator's own desk.
