# The Love Declaration

### Definition

The named structural opening of the book -- the first thing the reader receives. Sequence: love, then shared pain, then "I wished someone had done this for me," then "that's why I wrote this for you." Locks the reader in before [The Grease Trap] runs, and frames every hard truth that follows as coming from love rather than criticism.

### Explanation

The order matters more than the words. Pain without love first reads as an attack, and an operator who feels attacked closes the book. Love without pain reads as a greeting card, and an operator who isn't in pain has no reason to keep reading. The sequence does both jobs -- it earns the right to say the hard thing by saying the loving thing first, then it does the hard thing anyway.

Everything downstream depends on this opening holding. [The Grease Trap] works because the reader has already been told this comes from someone who's lived it and wants better for him. Strip the declaration and the same content reads as a stranger's opinion instead of a fellow operator's hand extended.
