# The Grease Trap

### Definition

Named structural device, origin story. Cleaning grease traps by hand, biscuits at 5 AM, gave up law school. The stage before the framework. Function: opens the book, establishes the author's authority through labor, not credentials.

### Explanation

Opening with this image rather than with credentials or framework content is a deliberate authority strategy, and it's the same strategy [The Primal Scream] uses at a different register -- testimony instead of qualifications. A grease trap cleaned by hand at 5 AM is about as far from an abstract business-book credential as it's possible to get, and that's exactly why it works as an opening: no reader can dismiss it as theoretical.

The detail about giving up law school does real work alongside the labor imagery. It establishes that the author's forty-four years in restaurants weren't a fallback or a lack of other options -- they were a choice made against a more conventional, higher-status path. That choice is what gives the origin story its weight: the author didn't end up in the grease trap by default, they chose the stage over the alternative, which is the same choice-by-design principle the framework asks every reader to eventually make for themselves.
