# The Back Lead

### Definition

The Lead who runs the kitchen in concert with the operator, replacing "kitchen manager" in the building's vocabulary. Paired with the Front Lead as the baseline two-Lead structure for counter-service operations, with [The Bar Lead] added as full-service or beverage-program complexity requires it.

### Explanation

The same structural frame governs every Lead title: the operator leads Leads, owns the Guest's travel path, and the Leads run the processes underneath it so the operator can complete that path. Not alone, not stationed -- in concert.

[The Back Lead] is the kitchen-side half of the baseline pairing. Counter-service runs on Front Lead plus [The Back Lead] -- two domains, front and back, each held by a Lead who answers to the operator. The editorial reason this title exists at all: "manager" is locked in this book's lexicon as a derogatory word, reserved for naming the failure of leadership collapsing into administration. A kitchen cannot be led by someone carrying a manager title without importing that failure mode into the name itself. Same grammar, same authority structure, same hierarchy -- it scales up with additional Leads as the operation grows, without ever needing the word manager to describe what any of them do.
