# Decoy Effect

### Category

IL

### Definition

The immutable tendency for any option set of three or more choices to contain at least one option constructed to make another option look better -- running in every option set regardless of whether the person who built the set intended it.

### Explanation

A vendor proposal with Basic/Professional/Enterprise tiers is not three genuine choices -- it is one recommended choice and two anchors designed to make it feel inevitable. The same mechanism runs inside the operator's own thinking when a difficult decision gets framed as a choice between two extremes, manufacturing an obvious middle answer that may not be the right path at all. Because [Decoy Effect] is immutable, the defense is not suspicion -- it is the discipline of asking which option was designed to make another look better, and who constructed the option set and toward what outcome, before evaluating any of it.

Family: Underlying mechanism behind The Decoy Option, the Layer 3 stress-test discipline inside [The Decision Architecture] that strips option sets to genuine alternatives before evaluating.
