# Authority To Execute

### Definition

The operational reach a role needs to actually deliver its responsibilities. Responsibility comes with the role itself; authority is what the operator grants the role to execute those responsibilities.

### Explanation

Handing someone a role's responsibilities without the matching authority is one of the most common -- and most quietly corrosive -- leadership failures in restaurant operations. The lead is held accountable for cast performance but can't actually adjust the schedule. The kitchen manager owns food cost but can't approve a vendor change. The responsibility is real; the authority to act on it isn't, and the gap between the two is where resentment and dysfunction grow.

This pairing is load-bearing across the whole accountability architecture. You cannot hold someone accountable for an outcome you didn't give them the authority to actually influence -- that's not accountability, it's blame with extra steps. Every role redesign should run this check before it runs anything else: does the authority granted actually match the responsibility assigned. If not, fix the mismatch before asking for better results.
